Mandarin/Nat Foreign plunder and cultural neglect have contributed to the loss of countless national treasures from historical sites and sacred ruins across China. Now, powerful, rich groups of mainland entrepreneurs are joining forces and pooling their resources to try and retrieve those valuable artefacts which are surfacing on the international art market. The Qiandao Lake in China's Zhejiang Province is home to natural wonder! Qiandao literally means 1000 islands. But what lies underneath is even more mysterious. Deep under these waters is as an ancient submerged city, dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-200 AD). It was once known as Lion City, named after the 5 Lion Mountain it's nestled under. The 100 feet deep waters have perfectly preserved this city from antiquity. They call it China's Atlantis Rediscovered. Except, rediscovered might not quite be the right word, since it's only been under water for about 50 years and it's only underwater because they flooded it when they built a dam. If famous auction houses can't be persuaded to return the works of art stolen from China, wealthy groups are simply paying whatever it costs to bring home these priceless pieces of history. Tourists pose for pictures and clamber over the ruins at Beijing's Old Summer Palace. The ancient monument was built during the reign of the Manchu Emperor Qianlong. Jesuit missionary friends of the Emperor were commissioned in 1747 to design the Rococo palace, and work as architects for the structure's European-style palaces, surrounded by elaborate fountains and baroque statuary. Europeans became enemies a century later during the Second Opium War. British and French troops burnt the wooden Chinese pavilions and temples, leaving only marble facades, some broken columns and traces of fountains. Many ancient historical relics were looted at this time. Fountains, here rendered in stone and bronze with human forms and heads of animals from the Chinese zodiac- each spouting water for two hours in turn -were removed by enemy soldiers who made off with five of the animal busts. These ruins are all that's left of the palace itself. They attract thousands of visitors each year. So many tourists visit the monument, that efforts are being made to try and limit the number of people allowed to explore the ruins. China is proud of its cultural heritage, and many feel that historical treasures plundered by foreign armies during the Opium Wars should be returned. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "I believe the national treasures should be returned to China. They shouldn't be auctioned." SUPER: Vox Pop, tourist SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Not only should we take them back, it's most important to stop them from being taken out of China again. This is important." SUPER: Vox Pop, tourist Three of those bronze heads - the monkey, ox and tiger - appeared for sale on the international art market last week in Hong Kong when Christie's and Sotheby's placed the items up for auction to the highest bidder. The sales caused widespread consternation among many Hong Kong and mainland Chinese. Scores of demonstrators gathered outside Sotheby's Hong Kong auction house as the relics were being auctioned off inside, and police were called to the scene as scuffles broke out. The protestors said the antiquities belonged to the Chinese people and had been looted by French and British troops in 1860. Stepping in to defend the mainland's position and rescue her stolen national treasures is the China Poly Group, an industrial conglomerate with interests in arms, property and telecommunications. Adding art to its list of interests, the China Poly Group with its strong connection to the People's Liberation Army, has embarked on a purchasing spree to buy back what China has lost to thieves. The group spent over four million U-S dollars in Hong Kong to purchase the three bronze heads which it intends to place in this special Beijing museum filled with looted Chinese bronzes. The Poly Group's mission is defined by a museum curator. SOUND BITE: (Mandarin) "If we only rely on government finances and government protection, it's not realistic. It need more private enterprises and people to join this movement to protect our antiquities. This should be the historical trend." Record sales by major auction houses in Asia have been partly fuelled by the patriotic buying of antiquities by Chinese tycoons and state-backed organizations. Buyers from China, a country with almost a million millionaires, have been snapping up Chinese art and artefacts, reflecting their growing wealth and increasingly sophisticated tastes. A voiced AFPTV report.

Close up of Greek Limestone Kouros, circa 550 B.C., 16. Pan of items STORYLINE: A rare collection of Greek and Roman antiquities will go under the hammer later this year at Christie's auction house in New York and on Thursday highlights of the sale went on preview. The most noticeable antique in the sale is a bronze statue of a young god or athlete that is expected to bring between 1.3 and 1.8 (m) million US dollars. Although most of the bronze statues in the collection are small-scale, this one is quite large, and the state of preservation is outstanding. The figure is depicted nude with his right hand extending forward, which perhaps originally held some object. His eyes are inlaid in glass and the detail in his hair is especially fine. The figure is a creation of the late Roman Republic or early Imperial period, and is inspired by similar examples in Greek sculpture. The sale includes approximately 300 ancient works from a single anonymous American collector who started buying the objects in the 1970s and amassed one of the most impressive collections of Greek and Roman antiquities in the United States. The sale also features Egyptian bronze statues and examples from the Near East, but the strength of the collection is its Greek, Etruscan and Roman material. The entire collection is expected to bring between five and seven (m) million US dollars. One of the objects, a Greek Amphora, is especially timely with the Olympics returning to Greece this summer. It features a scene with grappling boxers, one old and one young, with a javelin trainer on one side of them and a draped judge on the other. It is expected to fetch between 35 and 45 thousand dollars. The auction will be held 8 June at Christie's auction house in New York. Antiquities specialist Hannah Solomon looks at a selection of stunning pieces that draw a direct line between ancient cultures and the ways in which jewellery is made and worn today Find out more at http://www.christies.com/features/Ancient-jewellery-A-window-into-ancient-techniques-7757-3.aspx ‘I love that ancient jewellery provides a window onto ancient techniques and gold work,’ says Antiquities specialist Hannah Solomon. ‘I also think it’s amazing that you can see that styles haven’t changed that much — earrings that would have been worn in the 4th century B.C. in Italy by the Etruscans are quite similar to how we wear earrings today.’ The specialist goes on to look at some standout pieces from the Antiquities sale at Christie’s New York on 25 October. These include a pair of Etruscan gold ear studs from the late 6th century B.C. A pair of Etruscan gold ear studs. C. 530-500 BC. Each: 1¼ in (3.3 cm) diameter. Estimate: $30,000-50,000. This lot is offered in Antiquities on 25 October 2016 at Christie’s in New York, Rockefeller PlazaThe Etruscans were master gold workers,’ she explains, highlighting the tightly fitted beading (known as granulation) and tiny wires (filigree) which are fashioned into spiral shapes. ‘These would have been worn by inserting them into the ear and putting a pin behind them, so it’s very much a modern composition and something we see today with ear studs.’ Solomon also shows us an exquisite Greek olive wreath fashioned from hammered and rolled sheet gold that dates from around the 4th century B.C. ‘Olive wreaths would have been used to crown the winners of contests. We don’t believe that these were worn. We think that they were ceremonial, perhaps used in a funerary context.’ The fact that some of the leaves on this wreath have been burned suggests that it was placed on a funeral pyre. A Greek gold olive wreath. Late classical period to early hellenistic. 9½ in (24.1 cm) wide. Estimate: $250,000-350,000. This lot is offered in Antiquities on 25 October 2016 at Christie’s in New York, Rockefeller Plaza This Celtic gold torque from the 4th century B.C. is made from hammered sheet gold, but what makes it quintessentially Celtic are the differences in its design: Greek and Etruscan motifs such as florals and palmettes have been created in raised relief and abstracted so that they turn into faces with spiral eyes and elongated noses. A Celtic gold torque. C. late 4th century BC. 7⅛ in (18 cm) wide. Estimate: $120,000-180,000. This lot is offered in Antiquities on 25 October 2016 at Christie’s in New York, Rockefeller Plaza Ancient jewellery, Solomon suggests, is a wonderful way to get involved with antiquities. ‘There are so many things that are hard for us to understand, be it religion, social structure or politics. But ancient jewellery is quite relatable.’

Watch more and discuss: http://greenwich.itsrelevant.com/content/17756/chinese-antiquities-donated-to-the-bruce-museum In one of the largest donations of art in recent years, Fred and Jane Brooks of Greenwich have donated six Tang Dynasty ceramics to the Bruce Museum. "The Bruce has had the benefit of being owned by the people in town but really hasn't attracted people from far and wide," said Fred Brooks, donor of the collection. "It's our hope that this will be the instigation for other people, not only collectors of Chinese antiquities who could augment our collection and help it grow into other periods, but to make The Bruce a destination." A destination well worth the trip. The donated works all date from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), which is regarded as one of the greatest periods of artistic creativity in China. "There are two types, one is multi-colored glaze, or tricolor glaze, as well as painted pieces," explained Brooks. "There is no rhyme or reason why one piece would be done the other way and some were painted and glazed. The pieces were created for decoration in the homes of the nobility but also as funereal figures, they were buried when the emperor died and were regarded to be utilitarian to be used in the after life." The gift and the promise of additional donations from the collection will help establish the Bruce Museum as an important center for the study of Chinese antiquities. "The museum will end up with one of the best collections of Chinese antiquities in the country and enhance the prestige of the museum and the museum enhances the prestige of the Town and of our collection." The collection will be on display through April 11th. Produced By: Sarah Michler
